Film Review One: Great Artists In Their Own Words

1. Does art need to be a unique and physical object?

  • I think it does need to be unique, but I don't think it needs to be a physical object.

2. Are Andre’s Bricks art? Why?

  • I think that they are art, they are his preferred method of being expressive and creative, and creating them is his way.

3. Should art be precious

  • I would argue that yes, art should be precious. Art is expressive, and beautiful, and can teach us so much about the world around us and the experience of others in it. Precious, yes. Long lasting, not necessarily. ‘Precious’ doesn’t mean it needs to be here forever.

4. Do you agree with the statement of Richard Long? “The process of making art is as important as the final piece”

  • Yes, the process, especially in performance pieces the process is key.

5. What do you think of Gilbert and George living sculptures? Are they art for the people?

  • I think that their art focussed heavily on being silly and provocative, which would have worked as a double edged sword. This would’ve been something that helped them become popular, but that would also work to their detriment as it portrays them as being insincere and callous.

6. Is there anything you wouldn’t use in your work/anything off limits?

  • I don’t like to feature detailed gore/vore, and I refuse to be discriminatory or cruel through my work.

7. Do you think art can heal?

  • Yes. While art might not be the prescribed medication for a broken bone, I believe that art has great capability to heal emotional and psychological wounds. Art can be wild and all-consuming, or quiet and reflective, and sometimes that’s all that’s needed.

  • Joseph Boyce was very apt at showing this

8. Which artist/art movement did you identify with the most? And why?

  • Probably that of Louise Bourgeois. I admire the sheer emotion and passion that she uses to make her work, and her absolute refusal to take pity and criticism.

Film Review Two: Grayson Perry All in the Best Possible Taste

1. What is taste?

  • Taste is something you adopt and adapt as you get older, and is usually a reflection on the person themselves

2. What is culture?

  • It’s a generalisation of your taste

3. Can doing up a car be art?

  • Sure

4. Why do you think people are more likely to spend £1000 on a tattoo than a painting or a sculpture?

  • Because a tattoo is personal and permanent. It has connotations of being part of you forever, and becoming a piece of your identity

5. Should art be accessible?

  • Yes, absolutely.

6. What do you think of Grayson Perry’s methodology?

  • I really like his hands on, delving-in approach to his work and research. Just jumping in and damning the consequences.

7. Does class affect the sort of art you make?

  • I don’t think it does, no. I tend to have my art being very removed from my life and the real world.

8. Do you like Kitsch art?

  • I'm not really sure

9. Do you see your own work in a historical context?

  • No? Unsure of what the question means.
